The race for the Áras →
A chara, – Some of the presidential candidates’ opening addresses as part of the TG4 díospóireacht must rank among the most patronising and tokenistic actions so far. To paraphrase Messrs Gallagher and McGuinness and Ms Scallon: I will take Irish lessons, vote for me. It was in effect saying, “Oh muise, ye poor Gaelgóirí, what use ye of ‘vision’ and ideals, I speakee de Gaeilge.”
Can it be...

By Anne Sheridan Published on Thursday 13 October 2011 09:00
IT MAY not sell in excess of six million copies like its English predecessor, but it is hoped Angela’s Ashes ‘as Gaeilge’ will inspire a new audience.
Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan, launched ‘Luaithreach Angela’ in the Frank McCourt museum on Hartstonge Street this week - on the 15th anniversary...

MYLES NA gCOPALEEN
Albeit playfully, Myles often criticised the leading articles with which he shared a page. This column was provoked by an editorial suggesting that the half a million then spent annually on Irish would be better used for slum clearance. Behind the jokes, it’s a serious statement of his attitude to a language with which he had a complex but protective relationship. The irony is...

OPINION: To justify its budget, Foras na Gaeilge must play a more assertive role
IN THESE straitened economic times, when “value for money” is the constant refrain, it is appropriate to look at how funds are spent spend money on the promotion of the Irish language.
While those inherently hostile to the language will use the economic difficulties for another demand that the...

Irish - An Teanga
somhairleog:
I have been learning Irish on and off for over 3 years now, for me it’s like a roller coaster and right now I’m climbing one of the smaller drops.
Peoples attitude to the language is incredible, it goes to show how emotive a language can be. While a recent survey found 93% of the Irish population had a positive attitude to Irish, most people on the street think I’m mad to learn...

II speak a language that only about 5% of the population of my country use on a daily basis. Even though such a small group use it that often, it is fairly visible on some signage and in some media around the country - a country which is meant to be bilingual.
It’s meant to be bilingual, but it’s not. 95% of the country don’t speak it (regularly, at least) while some go so far as to...
