A gloss from Gàidhlig to Gaeilge
sruthnamaoile: One of my good friends came across this incredibly useful web page with a gloss from Scottish Gaelic to Irish Gaelic. Notice how the editor says ‘Albanach - Éireannach’, literally meaning ‘Scottish - Irish’. Pay a visit by clicking on this link.

Cothrom na seachtaine seo 40 bliain ó shin mhúscail mé maidin agus bhí ceantar s’againne i ndiaidh a bheith gearrtha ar shiúil ón stát. Tugadh imtheorannú isteach ar 4.00 r.n. maidin 9ú Lúnasa 1971 agus faoi 6.00 r.n. bhí Lóiste na Móna ina teircheantar – ceantar ‘No-Go.’ Bhí brat na dTrí Dhath in airde ar an ‘Home’ (lárionad mar a coinníodh gasúir dolba) bhí roinnt comharsana linn ag seasamh...

Teaching Irish in Connemara 1907 →
Ronnie O’gorman It may sound like a contradiction of terms, but teaching the Irish language in the opening decades of the last century could also be a method of teaching English. Irish was the spoken language in most homes of the west of Ireland, but it was recognised that knowledge of English was essential when emigration was usually the only way a young man or girl could better ...

Column: We need to keep Irish alive, but the... →
AS A NATIVE Irish speaker, no debate irks me more than the Irish language debate that gets trotted out every few years as zealots from both sides try and recruit to their respective aims. Some people don’t like the Irish language; others love it to a twitching fervour. I don’t begrudge either side their views; I just find them annoying. Both sides wish the eradication of a language on these...

The NI Education Minister, John O’Dowd, has approved a development proposal to increase capacity at Gaelscoil Ui Neill in Coalisland. “The Department has a statutory duty to encourage and facilitate the development of Irish-medium education, in line with parental demand,” he said. “Evidence shows that demand from parents in the Coalisland area to have their children educated through the...

feck-yeah-ireland: Somebody when I was at college said, “You’re going to be asked why on earth you’re learning a dying language,” and his only answer was that if your mother was dying, you wouldn’t want her to die alone. Gaeltacht in danger of being silenced →
The effort of 10 years, culminating in the Government’s 20 Year Strategy for Irish, now risks being lost due to the lack of resources to implement the strategy. The irony of our predicament is that the state and government have invested time and resources in this language strategy, but that the issue has become marginal in the broader political and sociological sphere. A case in point being the...
